Luis A. Ruiz
Shihan Luis Ruiz was born on February 24, 1970 in Manhattan, New York, He lived in Brooklyn the first 8 years of his life, he then moved to Puerto Rico with his family. His brother who had a passion for Karate was attending Shorinji-Ryu Karate classes and inspired him to begin his martial arts quest, becoming his first Sensei (Karate instructor) where he began learning Shorinji-Ryu.
His first official instructor was Tae-Kwon-Do Master Tan in Isabella Puerto Rico, where he trained until red Blet and then; he then moved on to Kung-fu (Choy Lay-Fut) with Sifu Jose Ramirez. Then, in a tournament held in Puerto Rico he met Sensei Wilfredo Herrera & Edie Cardona, a life changing point.
Shihan Luis began his training in Shotokan Karate-Do, he was immediately impressed by the dedication, discipline, control, and other incredible qualities that Sensei Wilfredo had. Shihan Luis loved Karate with a passion and joined the PR Jr National Team.
Shihan Luis earned his way to a Black Belt under Wilfredo Herrera Sensei and was tested for this belt under Wilfredo and the Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association. Shortly after receiving his Black belt he decided to join the Army reserve where he was sent to Saint Louis Missouri for basic training and other additional training.
Shihan Luis continues to train and is now a Fith Degree (Godan) Black Belt. Shihan Luis Ruiz currently holds a 5th degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate-Do, Under Master Keigo Abe, And Under the World Union Shotokan Association and He is a member of the USA National Karate Federation, a USA National Karate official. At the international level, he is a Double A Pan American Karate official.
Shihan Luis is also a 10 times regional champion, 6 Times National Champion, and 3 times international champion. He has won over 200 trophies 150 medals and numerous other awards in local tournaments. He was member of the Puerto Rico Jr Karate Team, and helped trained the Dominican Karate team in the USA that attend the Dominican Games in 2006. His latest Accomplishment was the Gold Medal at the US Open In Las Vegas on April 5th in 2012.
Shihan Luis Owns the Goshin Ryu Martial Arts & Fitness dojo in Brooklyn and has made over 100 US National Champions and has had 15 US Team Members in his team.
Shihan Luis still carries the Shotokan Karate values as it was taught to him in Puerto Rico and in NY.
Shihan Luis Is The Chief Instructor of the Goshin Ryu Shotokan Karate-Do Association
Founder of the International Goshin Ryu Karate-Do Association (IGKA)
Former Treasurer of the New York Traditional Karate League (NYTKL)
Former General Secretary of the Dominican Karate Association in NY.
